After eight months of protests and bloodshed in Libya, Muammar Gaddafi was killed in the town of Sitre earlier this day. Captured by Libyan fighters, a video of Gaddafi covered in blood and dragged on the floor surfaced on the internet and spread around the world. The Libyan government then confirmed his death.
Libyan prime minister Mahmoud Jibril said in a news conference in Tripoli, “We have been waiting for this moment for a long time, Muammar Gaddafi has been killed.” The Guardian Reports.
According to an article in Reuters today by Tim Gaynor and Taha Zargoun the exact details of Gaddafi death are uncertain and the accounts are conflicting. “Jibril, reading what he said was a post-mortem report, said Gaddafi was hauled unresisting from a sewage pipe.”
“They captured him alive and while he was being taken away, they beat him and then they killed him,” one senior source in the National Transitional Council told Reuters. “He might have been resisting.”
The video , the reports states, offers some clues to what happened. Fighters rejoiced over the death of Gaddafi, two months after the capture of Tripoli, and the end of his 42 year rule.
President Barack Obama declared: “The rule of an iron first inevitably comes to and end.”
